Disability

Indian Constitution has provided equal human rights to all Indian citizens thereby ensuring personal dignity of each person. It has provided equal status to each caste, religion, class, poor, affluent, disabled, etc. It has also guaranteed protection of human rights.

Despite this way of life of vast people of the country varies. The disabled are seen with pity and compassion. This way of looking at the disabled is just a social concept and does not have any solid fact or scientific reason. Our society has not given the diabled a chance to show their talent. This is the reason that the disabled feel their disability all the time.

Viewd in the perspective of Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jalore district, it is found that the condition of the disabled is quite pathetic. Nearly 75 per cent disabled are not enefited from the services for them as they do not have any knowledge of welfare scheme for them. Because of this lack of knowledge they are dependent on some other person socially and economically. There is a need to associate the disabled with some programmes for their self-reliance and also for their rehabilitation in an environment to which they are familiar with.

Moreover, there is no hospital at the block level in either of the three districts where the organisation works (Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jalore). The situation is so bad that orthopaedic surgeons are not available even at the district headquarters. The eye specialists are available only at the district hospital. Because of this the eligible disabled have to go to Jodhpur or Ahmedabad for their treatment. This state of affairs has only helped in increasing the reate of diablity in the area.

To meet the challenge, PWDDS is carrying out a number of activities:

  • Dialogue with the disabled person, his/her family and the society
  • Assistance services, including provision of disability certificates, bus passes and railway passes
  • Capacity building on disability law
  • Social, economic and educational rehabilitation services
  • Annual convention of the disabled
